Damp Proofing & Associated Services
.jpg)
Chemical damp-proofing may provide a useful barrier to damp. Electro osmotic damp proofing, if expertly installed, works in most situations. A damp proof course ( DPC ) is a physical barrier inserted into the fabric of a building to stop water passing from one place to another. This can be on a horizontal plane, stopping water rising up from the ground by being sucked up by the dry masonry above, or vertically to stop water passing from the outside of a building, though the masonry, to the inside. DPC's have taken many forms through the ages and one of the earliest forms was to use a layer of slate in the construction. Slate is still used but the less expensive plastic version is now more widely used.

Garage Doors

The garage usually has a door on the front of the building for vehicles to enter and exit. Most garage doors open upward using an electric chain drive (garage door opener), which can usually be remotely controlled from the resident's car with a small radio transmitter. Other garages may have a wooden or manually worked door. Garages are connected to the nearest road with a door leading to the driveway. Interior space for one or two cars is typical, and garages built since the 1950s typically have a door directly connecting the garage to the interior of the house (an "attached garage"). In the past, garages were often separate buildings from the house, almost resembling modern sheds. On occasion, a garage would be built with an apartment above it, which could be rented out. As automobiles became more popular, and convienience essential, the idea of attaching the garage directly to the house grew into a common practice. While a person with a separate garage must walk outdoors in any type of weather, a person with an attached garage has a much shorter walk inside a building.

Loft & Roof Insulation

Thermal insulation is becoming an increasingly important part of construction performance. Modern building design calls for materials of high insulation value, whilst being cost effective and without hazard to the environment. Insulation can be any material used to support another beam or rafter and eliminate a column support. But is more commonly known as a material that offers resistance to heat transmission. When insulation is placed in walls, ceilings or floors it reduces the loss or gain of heat from outside sources.

Tiling
.jpg)
In general you get what you pay for. Pale coloured tiles with a dark biscuit (the bit behind the glaze) may let the biscuit colour grin through. For floors a lot of tiles aren't really tough enough for e.g. a kitchen. In that sort of environment I would use Quarry tiles or the fully vitrified type. For a bathroom most tiles are suitable but avoid shiny smooth finishes on the floor to avoid a bad fall. Mosaic tiles on a sheet of paper are another option, but for permanently wet areas avoid the type of mosaic with the paper or cloth scrim stuck to the backs of the tesserae, as the adhesive used to do this is frequently not waterproof.
